What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and why your website needs it

19 August 2026 · 3 min read

More and more people no longer ask their question to Google, but to an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity. Those tools return a single answer, with a handful of sources. The question is simple: do you get mentioned there, or does your competitor?

That is what GEO is all about.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: optimizing your website so that AI answer engines understand, trust and cite your content. Where classic SEO gets you higher in Google's blue links, GEO makes sure your brand shows up in the generated answer itself.

In short: SEO targets the search results page, GEO targets the answer the user actually sees.

GEO versus SEO: what is the difference?

SEO and GEO are not opponents, they complement each other. The foundation is largely the same: good, fast, technically correct content. But the emphasis differs.

  • SEO optimizes for ranking: keywords, backlinks, clickable titles.
  • GEO optimizes for citation: clear facts, a clear structure, and machine-readable context such as llms.txt and structured data.

An AI model does not read your page the way a human does. It looks for unambiguous, well-structured information that it can adopt with confidence. The easier you make it, the greater the chance you get mentioned.

Why does GEO matter now?

Three reasons why you should already be working on this today:

  1. Behavior is shifting. A growing share of searches happens through AI assistants and AI overviews instead of classic search results.
  2. Most websites are not ready for it yet. Whoever invests now gets a head start before the rest follows.
  3. AI answers help shape your reputation. If a model picks up outdated or incorrect info about you, that ends up in the answer. GEO gives you a grip on what is being said.

How do you make your website GEO-proof?

A GEO-proof website has a number of building blocks. This is the checklist we use:

  • An llms.txt file that gives AI models a clear overview of your site.
  • Structured data (schema.org) so machines correctly interpret your services, FAQ and articles.
  • A knowledge base and FAQ with clear question-and-answer, exactly what models like to cite.
  • Clear, factual content instead of vague marketing language.
  • A strong technical foundation: fast, well built, and crawlable for both Google and AI bots.
  • Consistent information about your company, services and offering, across all your pages.

The good news: much of this also strengthens your classic SEO. You do not build twice, you build once and build it well.

What does Loerie do when it comes to GEO?

We build websites that work for both people and AI models. Concretely:

  • A GEO audit of your current site: where do you stand, and what is missing?
  • Making your website technically GEO-proof, with llms.txt, structured data and a knowledge base.
  • Content that is citable, written to both persuade and get mentioned.

Frequently asked questions about GEO

Does GEO replace my SEO? No. GEO comes on top of SEO. The technical foundation is largely shared; GEO adds the layer that makes you visible in AI answers.

Does GEO only work for large companies? No. Smaller players in particular win here, because most competitors are not working on it yet.

How quickly do I see results? You lay the technical foundation right away. Visibility in AI answers builds up after that, as models pick up your content.
